Awful. And when it comes down to it, just truly sad.
Despite the state of New York legalizing same-sex marriage, a town clerk in Cayuga County, New York, has refused to sign the licenses, and has asked that she be be allowed to let a deputy take over the job.
According to a citizen in the town:
“Ledyard Town Clerk Rose Marie Belforti submitted a letter to the Ledyard Town Board saying that her religious beliefs prevented her from signing marriage licenses for same-sex couples and the board discussed Belforti’s letter at Monday’s meeting, according to John Binns, a member of the town board.”
Ugh. Absolutely deplorable.
The law is the LAW, lady! If you don't like it, work somewhere else!
Luckily, that seems to also Gov. Andrew Cuomo's opinion on the matter, as he's stated publicly that if town clerks cannot follow the legislation, then they need to leave their posts!
Good! Have fun trying to find another job in this economy, gurl!
